Terminology summary of elevator technology

Release date:2019/10/15

Car - a unit used for carrying, consisting of a car frame, a car floor, an enclosure and a car door.

Holding brake - an electromechanical device that prevents the elevator from moving again when the elevator car is stationary and the motor is de energized. In some forms of control, it will stop the elevator when the motor is powered off.

Brake shoe - the moving part of the brake, with a friction surface. When the brake drum pushes it, it will stop the elevator in the flat state. In some forms of control, it will stop the elevator when the motor is powered off.

Layout - a scale drawing showing the elevator plan, shaft elevation, room space, relative size, and location of installed equipment.

Guide rail - a T-shaped rail with a machined surface, mounted vertically in a shaft, used for guiding the movement of an elevator car or counterweight.

Guide wheel - use a rolling wheel instead of a guide shoe to slide on the surface of the guide rail.

Brush - usually made of carbon or graphite, used to connect the motor to the rotor of the generator. It transfers current to the stator.

Counterweight - the weight used to balance the car plus approximately 40% of the rated load.

Generator - a device (usually direct current) that converts chemical energy into electrical energy.

Handrail - the part of an escalator whose side is above the rung and includes a skirt, an inner side panel, a cover plate, and a handrail.

Handrail - (1) the mobile belt installed on the top of the escalator handrail for the passenger to hold. (2) a strip used as a support.

Handrail - a bracket, usually made of rubber, installed at the junction of the handrail and the handrail to prevent the fingers of passengers from being clipped into the gap between the handrail and the handrail.

Specifications - a set of standards for the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of elevators, dining elevators, escalators and moving walkways.

Specification - a document detailing the plan, materials, dimensions, and all other requirements and objectives of each item of equipment to be installed.

Fire alarm operation - a device or group of devices used to (1) provide a specific signal to immediately lower the elevator in normal operation to the preset floor; (2) allow firefighters or other specific personnel to use the elevator.

Machine room - the place where the traction machine of one or a group of elevators, dining elevators, freight elevators or escalators is placed.

Relay - an electronic device that turns on or changes the control loop when preset conditions are met.

Roof access box - a control panel mounted on the top of the car. When it is started, the car will break away from normal operation and only be controlled by it to run at the maintenance speed.

Car control panel - a panel provided in the car to operate the lift. There are floor selection buttons, door opening and closing buttons, alarm buttons and other switches or buttons needed to operate the elevator.

Car guide rail - a T-shaped rail with a machined surface, installed vertically in the hoistway and used to guide the movement of the elevator car.

Car counterweight - a group of weights attached to a car in the form of a drum. In the actual installation, its weight is about 70% of the car weight.

Hoistway - a passage through which one or more elevators, freight elevators, or food elevators operate. It includes the space from the pit to the bottom of the machine room or the top of the building.

Control cabinet - one or a set of equipment used to control the connected equipment according to the preset procedure.

Door operator - a device installed on a car that is driven by a motor to open or close a door.

Door lock - any mechanical lock used to prevent the door from being opened inside the elevator hall door.

Leveling - when the elevator approaches the landing door sill in the leveling area. Leveling refers to a process that completely and automatically reaches a floor or a parking position (the plane of car platform is flush with that of hall door).

Sheave - a wheel mounted on a bearing that has one or more grooves for winding wire ropes.

Traveling cable - cable used to connect the lift car of an elevator, dining elevator or freight elevator with the signal of its machine room or hoistway.

Hall door up and down indication - signal display device installed in the elevator hall. When the elevator is approaching the floor, it shows the direction of the elevator.

Step - a platform on an escalator for carrying passengers.

Gearless traction machine - a kind of traction machine whose driving wheel is directly connected with the motor. Since no gearbox is used, it is called gearless.

Speed limiter - (1) a mechanical speed control device. For the elevator, it is a centrifugal device for braking the traction rope. It will drive the car safety device. When the downward speed of the elevator exceeds the preset value, it will start the power-off switch and stop the elevator. (2) for the escalator, it is a direct centrifugal device. When the escalator is over speed, it will be powered off and braked.

Governor overspeed switch - part of the escalator main unit. When running under centrifugal force, when the actual speed of the motor exceeds 20% of the rated speed, it acts.

Governor rope - a wire rope attached to the car frame to pull the governor. When the speed limiter acts, it will start the safety device.

Traction machine - used to lift or lower elevators, freight elevators, meal elevators or drive escalators.

Traction wheel - traction elevator is used to hang grooved wheels around the traction rope. The movement of car and counterweight is driven by the traction wire rope through it.

Hydraulic elevator - an elevator driven by the movement of liquid in a hydraulic cylinder under the pressure of a piston.

Hydraulic cylinder - the outer most cylindrical shell of a hydraulic jack.

Cogged traction machine - transmission of power from the motor to the drive through the reduced speed gear
